But Love Is Not A Victory March
That’s a line from one of the most lyrically beautiful songs I’ve ever heard, Hallelujah, which was written by Leonard Cohen. The first time I heard it was when I watched The OC’s Season 1 final episode, where all the characters turned out to be so freaking depressed and the song just had to be played in the background, resulting to my first ever emotional depression due to a TV show.
In my opinion, the late Jeff Buckley’s version of Hallelujah is the most poignant and most beautiful of all the covers I’ve ever heard, even understating the original. Yes, even Leonard Cohen approves of it as the best cover.
Anyway, I fell more in love with the song when I read the article which I linked in this post. I love how Leonard Cohen originally wrote a rough 80 verses and it took him two years to finish it! That’s a lot of history for a song, if you ask me.
I cried reading the article. I don’t know, maybe because I just really love Hallelujah and I knew there was always something deeper about it, and when I found out it had a difficult history, I felt complete.
